The list of the 50 best restaurants in the world is of course always awaited with excitement and enormous media hype. And again and again one hopes for one or the other surprise and innovation. For 2018, the chances were good, a change at the top was certain. The former leading restaurant Eleven Madison Park in New York had a renovation break for four months – and the eternal darling of the Top 50 list, Noma, opened in 2018 in the new space, but too close to make it into the current rating. This is because the 1,040 jurors on the list worldwide should have eaten at the ten restaurants they recommend within the last 18 months.
The 2018 World’s 50 Best Restaurants list is always controversial due to its scoring methodology, and is the least transparent and supposedly the easiest list to manipulate. At least it is tried again and again in various ways. Nevertheless, there is hardly a ranking with more charisma and significance for the Branch – in any case, the Top 50 is and remains the list with the strongest media impact.
In the end, however, in the front places the expected candidates have asserted themselves, the Osteria Francescana in first place, the three Rocca brothers in second and Mauro Colagreco secured third place with the Mirazur.
In German-speaking countries, Steirereck in Vienna leads the way in 14th place. The highest German entry belongs to Tim Raue’s restaurant in Berlin, which improved to a great 37th place, followed by Andreas Caminada’s Swiss Schloss Schauenstein in 47th, Vendôme at 66, the Aqua at 73, the Nobelhart & Schmutzig at 88 and the Atelier in Munich at 97.
