Restaurant rating portal Opinionated About Dining (OAD) has published the results of its this year’s “Top 100+ European Restaurants 2018” rating survey of more than 5,000 registered restaurant guests and food bloggers worldwide. As one of the internationally relevant sources for restaurant rankings, the OAD community selects Andreas Caminada’s Schloss Schauenstein in Fürstenau, Switzerland, as #1 on the current European list. “In 2003, the then just 25-year-old chef opened his restaurant in Fürstenau, officially the smallest town in the world. In just seven years, Andreas Caminada cooked his way to the top of the world in his beautiful restaurant at the foot of the Swiss Alps and has since been impressing with delicate, timeless creations whose perfection and craftsmanship are as captivating as Swiss clockwork,” said OAD editor Steve Plotnicki, explaining the choice. With his team, the go-getting chef transformed the historic castle into a place of lived-in hospitality. One of the OAD voters described Schloss Schauenstein as “one of the most beautiful places” he had ever eaten at.
Second place in the best list goes to Magnus Nilsson’s “Fäviken” restaurant in Järpen, Sweden, followed by Victor Arguinzoniz’s Etxebarri grill restaurant in the Basque Country in third place. Alain Passard’s restaurant “L’Arpege,” which previously held first place for two consecutive years, finds itself in fourth place in 2018. The announcement of the latest European list was celebrated in the presence of 200 guests, including many of the ranked chefs, journalists and well-traveled foodies, at the storied “Great Hall” of Sir Christopher Wren’s iconic Royal Hospital Chelsea in London. “What I’m particularly excited about in the 2018 list is the large number of new restaurants making their debut this year – including Belgian Kobe Desramaults’ “Chambre Séparée” and Björn Frantzén’s restaurant “Frantzén” in Stockholm, which made it straight into the Top10,” says Steve Plotnicki, revealing further: “In addition, our voters have discovered young, exciting restaurants in Germany and Austria for themselves, including “Ernst” in Berlin, “Sosein” in Heroldsberg and “Intense” in Kallstadt or Tian in Vienna and “Saziani Stub’n” in Straden, Austria.”
Members of the global OAD community voted restaurants from a total of 16 countries into the expanded Top100+, which has a total of 200 rankings. While gourmet addresses in Spain and France dominate, 17 restaurants in Germany, eight in Austria and three in Switzerland also made it into the ranking.
