Congratulations to Berlin. In addition, I am very pleased to have the great privilege this year to intensively accompany the Berlin Master Chef in the coming weeks. Of course I will have a closer look at the restaurant Markus Semmler and the current menu, but on the other hand I will also have the opportunity to be present at the official award ceremony at a grand gala. I will report!
The jury’s reasoning for choosing Markus Semmler reads: The development is spectacular, from young chef in Potsdam to the culinary Olympus. Experience is a gold treasure that must be gathered with care. This is exactly what our 2016 Berlin Master Chef did perfectly. His compositions are modern, original, light, each dish is a firework of flavors on the palate. And how does he cook: He’s an Escoffier disciple who loves the basics of classic French cooking, working with lots of cream and butter. The basic products are always first class, fresh and wherever possible from regional suppliers. It also creates scope for the company’s own ideas. Goose liver, for example, he boldly combines with rhubarb, the saddle of venison comes with black nuts. Show effects and fancy dress are left out of the equation
Criteria for the selection of the jury, which is composed of independent experts, are, in addition to the culinary art, the originality of the creations, the presentation of the dishes, the service and the ambience. The official honoring of this year’s winners and the presentation of the coveted awards in the form of a hand-painted plate from the Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin and a personalized magnum bottle of Vranken Pommery Brut Royal will take place with a special anniversary event on October 8 at Kraftwerk Berlin.
For Markus Semmler, this is already the second appointment as Berlin Master Chef. He received the title for the first time back in 1998, and in 1997 he was crowned Berlin’s Master Chef of the East.
