An excursion not only along the many meanders of the Danube and through the Danube breakthrough, much more an excursion into the stories behind products that are often taken for granted. Freshwater fish, for example. Just as they are still occasionally sold at the markets in the Upper Palatinate.
Lothar, whom we were privileged to accompany in , has been fishing these waters for many decades. Old fishing rights allow him to navigate wide areas of the Danube around Kehlheim . He knows the section we are about to pass like the back of his proverbial hand. For each coastal zone that we can see at a brisk pace from the boat, he can tell stories and show us some of the animals that are native here. We should see eagle owls, hawks, kingfishers and beavers. And especially the fish that can be caught here at this time of year. Hazel, catfish, braxes, barbel and scaled carp. We are allowed to take a large selection of his catch and prepare it in the evening as part of our first dinner at Foodcamp Oberbayern.
It is these stories of people around us who are wholeheartedly and passionately pursuing their profession, their vocation. Produce products. Grow fruits and plants. Breeding animals. Hunting. Fishing. Produce dairy products. Baking. Regionality. Sustainability. Authenticity. It’s not just products that need to be discovered, but above all people. To understand the products. To measure their were value.
Much more about this memorable trip can be found over at Johannes – I’ll stick now more to the impressions of our morning with Lothar on the Danube.
