“Opinionated About Dining” has released its latest ranking of the best contemporary restaurants in Europe. As in the previous year, the top places went to Denmark, Sweden and the Basque Country. The first-placed “Alchemist” is followed by Stockholm’s “Frantzén” and the Basque “Asador Etxebarri” in second and third place. The best gourmet addresses in Germany, Austria and Switzerland are “Victor’s Fine Dining by Christian Bau” in Saarland in 11th place, Vienna’s “Steirereck” in 39th place and Schloss Schauenstein in Graubünden in 6th place. The title of “Best New Opening” goes to Munich’s JAN. The award ceremony was held in Madrid with top chefs from all over Europe.
Restaurant portal Opinionated About Dining (OAD) has unveiled the new results of its “Top100+ European Restaurants 2023” rating survey in Madrid. For the 10th anniversary of the Best List, founder Steve Plotnicki united highly decorated chefs, award winners and foodies for a 10-course gala menu at “Desde 1911,” which was voted Best New Opening last year. As one of the internationally relevant sources for restaurant rankings, the OAD community, consisting of registered diners and food bloggers, selected their European-wide favorites in the genre “Contemporary Cuisine”.
The top 5
For the third year in a row, first place went to Copenhagen’s two-star restaurant Alchemist , with Rasmus Munk at the helm. Second place goes to last year’s runner-up Björn Frantzen of Stockholm’s three-star Frantzén restaurant, while Victor Arguinzoniz’s Basque restaurant Asador Etxebarri holds its own in third place. “The repeat success of this top group shows the exceptional class in which these restaurants operate. The culinary experiences guests have there are simply unique and have a long-lasting effect,” says Plotnicki. Pedro Sánchez’s Bagá rises to 4th place, closely followed by Desde 1911, the highest climber in the ranking at 5th place.
Best new restaurant
The title for the best new restaurant in Europe in 2023 goes to Germany: Jan Hartwig enters the overall ranking in 133rd place with JAN, after the restaurant only opened in Munich in October 2022. “With new openings like JAN, as well as Tohru at Schreiberei and the new appointments at Alois and Tantris, I’m happy to see Munich once again becoming an exciting destination for foodies,” said OAD founder Steve Plotnicki.
