The best restaurants on the OAD Europe 2024 leaderboard

Opinionated About Dining” has published its latest ranking of the best restaurants in Europe. Munich’s “JAN”, run by three-star chef Jan Hartwig, is the first restaurant in Germany to make it into the Top 3. as in the previous year, the top spot goes to “Alchemist” in Denmark, followed by the Basque “Asador Etxebarri” in 2nd place. the best gourmet address in Switzerland is “Schloss Schauenstein” in 6th place and in Austria the Viennese “Steirereck” in 40th place.

Restaurant portal Opinionated About Dining (OAD) has unveiled the new results of its “Top100+ European Restaurants 2023” rating survey in Madrid. For the 10th anniversary of the Best List, founder Steve Plotnicki united highly decorated chefs, award winners and foodies for a 10-course gala menu at “Desde 1911,” which was voted Best New Opening last year. As one of the internationally relevant sources for restaurant rankings, the OAD community, consisting of registered diners and food bloggers, selected their European-wide favorites in the genre “Contemporary Cuisine”.

3rd place for the first time in Germany
The Munich-based “JAN” improved from 133rd to 3rd place as the “biggest mover”. No restaurant in Germany has been ranked higher in the eleven-year history of the OAD ranking. “Our community is enthusiastic about JAN and the impressive success of Jan Hartwig also underlines Munich’s current important role in the international gourmet scene,” comments Steve Plotnicki, founder of OAD and OAD Travel. Just last year, the restaurant was honored as the best new opening in Europe. The award was correspondingly unexpected for three-star chef Jan Hartwig: “I am overwhelmed and very happy about this fantastic response. My thanks go to the many voters and guests who travel to us in Munich from all over the world. The strong ranking at OAD is an incredible motivation for my team and me.”

The top 5 2024
The Copenhagen restaurant “Alchemist” tops the ranking for the fourth time in a row. Rasmus Munk’s elaborately staged, creative cuisine has once again impressed the international jury. “OAD’s reviewers return time and time again to experience Rasmus Munk’s all-encompassing Alchemist. This is a great testament to both Munk’s skill and creativity as a chef and the pure joy that his manifesto of holistic cuisine brings to all who visit,” says Plotnicki. The “Alchemist” challenges the conventional definition of a restaurant by merging gastronomy, theater and art. The experience is enhanced by a dining room in which guests are served around 45 edible impressions under a gigantic planetarium dome accompanied by artistic projections.

The top positions in the DACH region

At 16th place, Dylan Watson-Brawn’s “Ernst” in Berlin, which is only open until the end of 2024, leaves the list this year (23/2023). The “Vendôme” by Joachim Wissler in Bergisch-Gladbach in 47th place (46/2023) and the “Essigbrätlein” by Yves Ollech and Andree Köthe in Nuremberg in 64th place (49/2023) are still consistently represented for Germany.

In Switzerland, Marcel Skibba and Andreas Caminada’s “Schloss Schauenstein” remains in 6th place, as in the previous year, followed by Sven Wassmer’s “Memories” in Bad Ragaz, which moves up to 12th place in 2024 (50/2023).

Birgit and Heinz Reitbauer’s “Steirereck” restaurant in Vienna remains Austria’s best-placed restaurant in 40th place (39/2023), while the “Amador” restaurant in Vienna improves to 62nd place (67/2023).

From Hamburg’s point of view, the ranking of Bianc in Hafencity is particularly pleasing, as is the listing of the restaurant 100/200 (235th place). The Table by Kevin Fehling is in 336th place, while Lakeside Restaurants is ranked 457th.
